HISTORY OF ST ANNE’S

The history of St Anne’s Church is closely linked to the  history of the town of Strathpeffer.

In the Victorian times the discovery of sulphurous springs led to it becoming a popular Spa town under the patronage and encouragement of Anne, Duchess of Cromartie. The arrival of the railways did much to enable visitors to take the waters and enjoy the unique benefits of a Highland cure.

By 1889, it was apparent that in order to provide for the influx of workers and visitors a church was needed. In February the designs of John Robertson, an architect from Inverness, were accepted for a church to be built on land donated by Anne, Duchess of Sutherland and later, Countess of Cromartie. The completed building was dedicated to the memory of Anne by the Bishop in 1900.
